Press Release: Catoctin Creek partners with Adroit Theory Brewing Company to launch wicked whisky Día de los Muertos

Día de los MuertosOnly 147 bottles will be available at the Virginia distillery July 6

PURCELLVILLE, Va. (June 14, 2019) - - - It may only be summer, but the Day of the Dead is approaching! Catoctin Creek Distillery has collaborated with neighboring brewery, Adroit Theory to produce its second batch of Día de los Muertos, a sinfully delicious malt whisky. Catoctin Creek’s oldest whisky release to date, Día de los Muertos is extremely limited, with only 147 bottles available at the distillery’s tasting room on Saturday, July 6 from noon to 1 p.m. Catoctin Creek chief distiller, Becky Harris and Adroit Theory owner, Mark Osborne will be on-site to sign bottles and chat with guests.

“We’re very excited about the launch of Día de los Muertos whisky with the help of our friends at Adroit Theory, aka the evil mad genuises of the local beer world,” said Catoctin Creek co-founder and general manager, Scott Harris. “Due to the terrible ‘angel’s share’ in Virginia, there was a ton of evaporation on this spirit in the barrel. The good news is that the resulting alcohol is super-concentrated and especially delicious. The bad news is we have less to sell. But trust me when I say you’ll want to get your hands on it.”

Adroit Theory’s Día de los Muertos Russian Imperial Stout was aged and distilled by Catoctin Creek for “4.6” years in Minnesota white oak barrels. At 92 proof/46% ABV, the resulting Día de los Muertos whisky is full-bodied, rich, and overflowing with bold notes of caramel, chocolate, malt and honey-rubbed leather. Each bottle comes with a custom-made cedar gift box and will be available at the Catoctin Creek tasting room only for $159.99/750mL beginning July 6. Limited to one bottle per customer.

In addition to the launch of the wicked whisky, Adroit Theory is releasing a limited- edition Russian Imperial Stout used to make Día de los Muertos, aged in Catoctin Creek maple whisky barrels. Only 190 bottles featuring a hand-made cedar box will be available for purchase.

"Día de los Muertos Russian Imperial Stout holds a special place in our (black) hearts,” said Adroit Theory owner, Mark Osbourne. “It is the perfect balance between bitter and sweet and is as complex as it is drinkable. When we had the opportunity to have this beer distilled into a whisky, we were thrilled. We've tasted the final whisky and to say it is amazing would be an understatement. We decided to brew a new version of our Día de los Muertos Russian Imperial Stout and age it in Catoctin Creek Maple whisky barrels, just for this release. The result of that aging is a decadent, full-bodied brew with spice and dark dried fruit on the nose, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, roasted grains, and a boozy, yet smooth finish."

About Adroit Brewing Company: Adroit Theory Brewing Company, 404 Browning Court, is a nano brewery located in Purcellville, Virginia. Since its inception in 2014, owner Mark Osbourne has continued to "push the envelope" in terms of what can be done with beer. From extensive barrel aging, revolutionary brewing techniques, or exotic ingredients and adjuncts, Adroit Theory has made genre defying beers. As a small brewery, it has flexibility in its experimentation; often making as little as one keg of beer at a time. Adroit Theory does not have "flagship" beers. Instead, it elects to produce an ongoing series of “one-off" beers. In its five-year history, it has made well over 750 distinct beers, with an emphasis on esoteric beers. Visitors to its tap room will often be greeted with 30+ choices, but those selections change often. For more information, call (703) 722-3144 or visit Adroit-Theory.com.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Distilling Company to celebrate 10th anniversary with two special Bottled in Bond releases

Rabble RouserFour-year-old Rabble Rouser Rye Whisky and eight-year-old 1757 Virginia XO Brandy launch in limited markets on Feb. 16

PURCELLVILLE, Va. (January 7, 2019) - - - Catoctin Creek Distillery is celebrating its 10th anniversary next month with the release of two limited-edition Bottled in Bond spirits, Rabble Rouser Rye Whisky and 1757 Virginia XO Brandy, both launching on Feb. 16. For more information, visit CatoctinCreekDistilling.com.

Distilled in 100-gallon batches, the 1757 Virginia XO Brandy has been aging since 2010 in 53-gallon Bordeaux red-wine casks, making it both Catoctin Creek’s oldest release to date. The 50/50 blend of Seyval blanc and Chambourcin grapes used in the brandy is sourced from Tarara Vineyards in Leesburg, Virginia, only 10 minutes from the distillery. Although this is not the first time Catoctin Creek’s founding husband-and-wife-duo, Scott and Becky Harris have produced their 1757 Virginia Brandy, it will be the oldest release and the first as a Bottled in Bond product.

“We distilled this brandy during our first year of operation,” Harris said. “It epitomizes our attention to craft and collaboration. From the very beginning of our company, we worked with local farmers and vintners to produce products that capture the rich flavor and heritage of our region. We are honored to release this product for our 10th anniversary.”

Named after the year Virginia’s Loudoun County was founded, the eight-year-old XO brandy is soothing and warm, featuring rich hints of grape, raisin, date, fig, bread pudding, cherry and stone fruit. 1757 Virginia Brandy Bottled in Bond (100 proof/50% ABV) is a very limited release that will be available for $89.99 / 750mL at the distillery and through a limited number of select fine retailers across the Catoctin Creek distribution footprint.

Catoctin Creek’s four-year-old Rabble Rouser will also make its fourth debut next month. Although previously meeting the qualifications, February will mark the first time it’s labeled as “bottled in bond.” One of the craft distillery’s most sought-after whiskies, it offers a rustic flavor profile of clover honey, uncured bacon, deep earthy spice, sandalwood, white peaches, nectarines, peanuts and a hint of mesquite. Although bottled at 100-proof, the 100% rye mash is distilled to a lower proof, which captures many of the extra flavors typically lost to the distillation.

The name and meaning behind Rabble Rouser, referring to a person who inflames the emotions of a crowd of people, pays homage to the rowdy history that rye whisky played in the state of Virginia. Rabble Rouser Bottled in Bond Rye Whisky (100 proof/50% ABV) $95.99 / 750mL will also be available for purchase at the distillery and through a limited number of select fine retailers across the distillery’s distribution footprint.

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company wins four medals at New York World Wine & Spirits Competition

Roundstone Rye 80 Proof rye whisky awarded Double Gold, and Watershed gin, Roundstone Rye 92 Proof Distiller’s Edition and Cask Proof rye whiskies earn Silver

NYWWSC 2018 Double Gold NYWWSC 2018 Silver NYWWSC 2018 Silver NYWWSC 2018 Silver

PURCELLVILLE,VA, September 24, 2018—Catoctin Creek received multiple medals at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition (NYWWSC) held on August 22 and 23 at the New York Academy of Medicine. Accolades from the prestigious blind tasting include a Double Gold medal for the Virginia distillery’s Roundstone Rye 80 Proof whisky, awarded when all members of the esteemed competition’s judging panel give a Gold medal designation, as well as three Silver medals for its Roundstone Rye 92 Proof Distiller’s Edition whisky, Roundstone Rye Cask Proof whisky, and Watershed gin.

Considered Catoctin Creek’s most popular whisky, the Double Gold awarded Roundstone Rye 80 Proof is the original version of the craft distillery’s flagship product. A pre-Prohibition style rye whisky, it is made from local and 100% rye grain and aged in new Minnesota white oak casks.

“I like to call it our front porch sipper,” said Catoctin Creek co-owner and chief distiller, Becky Harris. “It’s a smooth and approachable single-grain rye whisky that features notes of caramel and rich butter toffee, with just a hint of lemon in the nose. Like all our spirits, it’s hand-crafted from scratch, with love, in our distillery.”

Catoctin Creek was also presented three Silver medals for its most awarded Roundstone Rye Cask Proof whisky, which is a strong, dark and surprisingly smooth 100% rye whisky released at approximately 58% ABV; as well as its specially curated Roundstone Rye 92 Proof Distiller’s Edition whisky; and amazingly complex Watershed gin distilled from rye grain, with a secret recipe of herbs and spices.

"We are truly honored and thrilled to be recognized by the judges at this prestigious competition,” says Catoctin Creek founder and general manager, Scott Harris. “We work hard to produce a variety of small-batch craft spirits and are proud to be Virginia's most awarded distillery.”

NYWWSC has established itself as one of the most respected judging events in the eastern United States. Beginning this year, NYWWSC became a full-fledged member of The Tasting Alliance, the parent organization of the world-renowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition and San Francisco International Wine Competition, which have earned an exceptional reputation among consumers in the wine and spirits trade. The 2018 NYWWSC received more than 395 entries across 60 categories, and spirits were judged by a panel of nine experts among the industry’s most trusted authorities.

PURCELLVILLE, VA—Catoctin Creek Distilling Company announces a major expansion of the brand nationally, adding 10 new states to the distribution map for the company, growing the footprint for the company to 25 states and the District of Columbia. The craft distillery’s growth comes, in part, because of the decision by Total Wine to carry the entire line of Catoctin Creek products in their retail stores nationwide.

"Over the past few years, we've significantly grown our barrel inventory," remarked Becky Harris. "Along with the acquisition of a new warehouse space in 2017, we have been planning this expansion for quite some time now. Press Release: Catoctin Creek Distilling Company Announces Packaging Redesign

Award-winning craft distillery partnered with Thoroughbred Spirits Group to create new label design

2017 Bottle Re-Design

PURCELLVILLE, VA—Catoctin Creek Distilling Company announces new packaging design on labels of its premium craft spirits. The new look, which will be found on all bottles throughout the Catoctin portfolio by the end of the year, was created in partnership with Thoroughbred Spirits Group.

Anchored by a new monogram and dogwood rondel, the rustic yet refined design signifies the distillery owners’ commitment to honoring the heritage of distilling in Virginia and the agrarian character of their surroundings in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located in northern Virginia’s scenic Loudoun Valley, Catoctin Creek was founded in 2009 by the husband and wife team of Becky and Scott Harris. With Scott running business operations as general manager and Becky crafting the finest spirits in the Commonwealth as chief distiller, Catoctin Creek uses local ingredients to produce a variety of small-batch craft spirits, including Roundstone Rye, which holds distinction as Virginia’s most-awarded whisky.

“We started Catoctin Creek because we wanted to make something by hand that put us closer to the land at home in Virginia,” says Scott Harris. “We’re extremely excited that our new label design speaks to that sense of place, offering a look that perfectly complements the craft spirits in our bottles.”

Tasked with refreshing the Catoctin Creek brand, the team at Thoroughbred Spirits Group, a consulting firm that assists distilleries with product development, business planning, branding and distribution, focused on the key elements of Catoctin’s rural identity, building a more succinct branding hierarchy and refined packaging concept.

“Throughout the project, our vision was a clean and refined brand that feels modern, yet carefully crafted,” says Benjamin Carr creative director of Thoroughbred Spirits Group. “We couldn’t be any prouder of the brand we have developed and have truly appreciated the journey with such like-minded clients as Scott and Becky.”

Adds Jason Griffin, Thoroughbred Spirits Group’s Director of Brand Development: “We knew from the beginning of this project that we wanted to amplify Catoctin Creek’s Virginia heritage and tie together the entire portfolio with a stronger brand identity across the range.  Thoroughbred’s interpretation of the new packaging tells more than just a story; it successfully creates a strong sense of place.”

The redesigned packaging will be available on shelves in the United States and Europe by the end of the year across five widely distributed products in Catoctin Creek’s portfolio: Roundstone Rye, Roundstone Rye – 92 Proof, Roundstone Rye – Cask Proof, Watershed Gin and Rabble Rouser.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Distilling Company Spirits to Enter Pennsylvania in September

Initial launch to feature award-wining Roundstone Rye, a pre-Prohibition style rye whisky made from 100-percent rye grain

Virginia-based craft distillery sources regional grain, including rye grown in Pennsylvania

PURCELLVILLE, VA, July 24, 2017 – Catoctin Creek Distilling Company has announced plans to begin selling its award-winning spirits in Pennsylvania in September. Upon launch this fall, premium spirits made by the craft distillery based in northern Virginia’s Loudoun Valley will be available throughout the state with concentration in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Founded in 2009 by the husband and wife team of Becky and Scott Harris, Catoctin Creek uses regional ingredients to produce a variety of premium spirits, including its flagship Roundstone Rye, which holds distinction as Virginia’s most-awarded whisky. A substantial amount of the grain used to make Roundstone Rye and other Catoctin products is sourced from Pennsylvania farms. Catoctin Creek’s bottles also come from Pennsylvania, made at Anchor Hocking Company in Monaca, near Pittsburgh.

“Every bottle we produce at Catoctin Creek is crafted by hand from the best grains,” says Scott Harris. “We have a great working relationship with many producers in Pennsylvania, so we can’t wait for the spirits we make with careful attention to detail to be enjoyed by people across the state.”

Catoctin Creek’s expanded distribution into Pennsylvania will start with its flagship product, Roundstone Rye, a pre-Prohibition style rye whisky made from 100-percent rye grain. Lauded across the globe with gold medals in London, New York and San Francisco, Roundstone Rye is one of very few ọṙḡạṇịc whiskeys available today. After being aged in new Minnesota white oak casks for just under two years, it is bottled at an approachable 80 proof, ultimately offering a smooth whisky that blends flavors of the wood with the spice of rye’s true grain character. A superb sipping whisky, Roundstone Rye also features notes of caramel, rich butter toffee, and just a hint of lemon in the nose.

Roundstone Rye will be carried in bars, restaurants and package stores where premium spirits are sold. The bottle retail price in Pennsylvania is $39.99. Additional Catoctin products are available on a special-order basis from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB).

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Announces Acquisition of 15,000 sq. ft. Facility

New facility in Virginia will push award-winning craft distillery towards goal of doubling production by next year

PURCELLVILLE, VA, June 1, 2017 – The owners of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company are happy to announce the acquisition of an additional 15,000-square-foot building in Virginia. The new facility will initially be used for warehouse storage, but could serve as an additional base for future operations as business grows for the award-winning craft distillery, which produces premium spirits from local grains in northern Virginia’s Loudoun Valley.

Catoctin Creek will continue to operate the business and perform distilling operations at its headquarters on 120 W. Main St., Purcellville, Va., where a very popular tasting room and distillery store is open to the public six days a week.

“The new facility is a first step towards much greater expansion,” says Catoctin Creek co-owner Scott Harris. “As we continue to craft spirits by hand from the best local grains, our goal is to double production by next year.”

Founded in 2009 by Scott and his wife, Becky Harris, Catoctin Creek uses local ingredients to produce a variety of premium spirits, including its flagship Roundstone Rye, which holds distinction as Virginia’s most-awarded whisky. With Scott running business operations as general manager and Becky focused on the art of crafting the finest spirits in the Commonwealth as chief distiller, the couple leads a small team of employees that are proudly making a variety high-quality products in an historic building in Purcellville’s quaint downtown.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Distilling Company Spirits to Enter Michigan in April

Roundstone RyeInitial launch to feature award-winning Roundstone Rye, a pre-Prohibition style rye whisky made from 100-percent rye grain

PURCELLVILLE, VA, April 13, 2017 – Catoctin Creek Distilling Company has announced plans to begin selling its award-winning spirits in Michigan on April 15. Upon launch, premium spirits made by the craft distillery based in northern Virginia’s Loudoun Valley will initially be available in Detroit, Lansing and Ann Arbor. Additional distribution locations will be added in the near future. The expansion into Michigan comes via Benchmark Beverage Company.

"Benchmark Beverage is very excited about selling the Catoctin Creek line all over the state of Michigan,” says Auday Arabo, President of Benchmark Beverage Company. “The distillery is making great products that we’re certain will be winners with our consumers.”

Founded in 2009 by the husband and wife team of Becky and Scott Harris, Catoctin Creek uses local ingredients to produce a variety of premium spirits, including its flagship Roundstone Rye, which holds distinction as Virginia’s most-awarded whisky. With Scott running business operations as general manager and Becky focused on the art of crafting the finest spirits in the Commonwealth as chief distiller, the couple leads a small team of employees that are proudly making a variety high-quality products in an historic building in the quaint downtown of Purcellville, Va. In a relatively short time Catoctin Creek has garnered many accolades and critical acclaim and expanded distribution across the country.

“Every bottle we produce at Catoctin Creek is crafted by hand from the best local grains,” says Scott Harris. “We can’t wait for the spirits we make with careful attention to detail to be enjoyed by people across Michigan.”

Catoctin Creek’s expanded distribution into Michigan will start with its flagship product, Roundstone Rye, a pre-Prohibition style rye whisky made from 100-percent rye grain. Lauded across the globe with gold medals in London, New York and San Francisco, Roundstone Rye is one of very few local whiskeys available today.

Roundstone Rye will be carried in bars, restaurants and grocery stores where premium spirits are sold. Availability of additional Catoctin Creek products in Michigan will be announced soon.

Press Release: Virginia resort offers first legal whisky made from grain grown in Loudoun County since Prohibition

Catoctin Creek Distilling Produces Private Label Rye Whisky for Virginia Resort and Tavern

LEESBURG, VA, February 17, 2017Lansdowne Resort and Spa, A Destination Hotel and Catoctin Creek Distilling Company are excited to release a private label rye whisky for the resort’s quintessential Virginia tavern, Coton & Rye. This is the first legal batch of alcohol made from grain grown in Loudoun County since Prohibition.

As a part of Coton & Rye’s overall celebration of the land, Coton farm and Virginia lifestyle, Director of Culinary Operations Marcus Repp and his Culinary Team are working closely with local farmers, artisans, vintners and distillers to offer guests the opportunity to connect with the community in simple but meaningful ways while at the resort. To make this connection to the local community deeper, the resort has selected a local batch of rye to produce their own private label rye whisky. The rye was grown at Morven Park through the historic estate’s farming co-op program. Trent Tebbe, Proprietor of Three Monkeys Farm farmed the rye and provided it to Catoctin Creek, which became Barrel 609.

“When we tasted Barrel 609 and learned about the rye’s conception in Loudoun County, it was a natural choice for Lansdowne,” said Michael Stephens, Managing Director, “Our commitment to the local community and staying true to our roots in Loudoun County is unwavering.”

The Catoctin Creek 'Coton & Rye' Private Barrel Whisky is only available on the Coton & Rye menu. Feature cocktails on the Coton & Rye menu include Cherry Blossom Julep (Catoctin Creek Rye, Ginger Ale and Tamarind Soda) and The Boulevardier, a cocktail invented during Prohibition (Catoctin Creek Rye Whisky, Aperol, Carpano Sweet Vermouth, and Orange Twist).

“The birthplace of American Whisky was Virginia. People made whisky out of necessity when Great Britain cut off ties with America,” explains Scott Harris, owner of Catoctin Creek, “We are beyond ecstatic to have the first batch of legal alcohol made from grain grown in the county since Prohibition.”

The Catoctin Creek 'Coton & Rye' Private Barrel Whisky is slated to make its debut to the public on Thursday, March 23rd at Coton & Rye. The Catoctin Creek Launch Party at Coton & Rye will take place on Thursday, March 23rd and is open to the public. Tickets are $35/each and available for purchase on Eventbrite.com.
