Press Release: Virginia resort offers first legal whisky made from grain grown in Loudoun County since Prohibition

Catoctin Creek Distilling Produces Private Label Rye Whisky for Virginia Resort and Tavern

LEESBURG, VA, February 17, 2017Lansdowne Resort and Spa, A Destination Hotel and Catoctin Creek Distilling Company are excited to release a private label rye whisky for the resort’s quintessential Virginia tavern, Coton & Rye. This is the first legal batch of alcohol made from grain grown in Loudoun County since Prohibition.

As a part of Coton & Rye’s overall celebration of the land, Coton farm and Virginia lifestyle, Director of Culinary Operations Marcus Repp and his Culinary Team are working closely with local farmers, artisans, vintners and distillers to offer guests the opportunity to connect with the community in simple but meaningful ways while at the resort. To make this connection to the local community deeper, the resort has selected a local batch of rye to produce their own private label rye whisky. The rye was grown at Morven Park through the historic estate’s farming co-op program. Trent Tebbe, Proprietor of Three Monkeys Farm farmed the rye and provided it to Catoctin Creek, which became Barrel 609.

“When we tasted Barrel 609 and learned about the rye’s conception in Loudoun County, it was a natural choice for Lansdowne,” said Michael Stephens, Managing Director, “Our commitment to the local community and staying true to our roots in Loudoun County is unwavering.”

The Catoctin Creek 'Coton & Rye' Private Barrel Whisky is only available on the Coton & Rye menu. Feature cocktails on the Coton & Rye menu include Cherry Blossom Julep (Catoctin Creek Rye, Ginger Ale and Tamarind Soda) and The Boulevardier, a cocktail invented during Prohibition (Catoctin Creek Rye Whisky, Aperol, Carpano Sweet Vermouth, and Orange Twist).

“The birthplace of American Whisky was Virginia. People made whisky out of necessity when Great Britain cut off ties with America,” explains Scott Harris, owner of Catoctin Creek, “We are beyond ecstatic to have the first batch of legal alcohol made from grain grown in the county since Prohibition.”

The Catoctin Creek 'Coton & Rye' Private Barrel Whisky is slated to make its debut to the public on Thursday, March 23rd at Coton & Rye. The Catoctin Creek Launch Party at Coton & Rye will take place on Thursday, March 23rd and is open to the public. Tickets are $35/each and available for purchase on Eventbrite.com.

Press Release: Constellation Brands Invests in Virginia's Catoctin Creek Distillery

Investment provides capital for growth in production and marketing in 2017

PURCELLVILLE, VA, January 5, 2017 - Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, LLC, a distillery operating in Purcellville in Loudoun County, Virginia, announced today that Constellation Brands acquired a minority stake in the Virginia distillery. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal.

"We created Catoctin Creek to produce award-winning 100% rye single-barrel whisky entirely from grain to glass," remarked Becky Harris, the president and chief distiller of Catoctin Creek.  "In order to expand our production and portfolio, we needed the right partner for the next level of growth. Constellation has a strong commitment to this category, and with their expertise and support, we look forward to bringing our Virginia whisky to the world with the same team and exceptional product quality."

"We are excited about our future in craft spirits," remarked Scott Harris, founder and general manager of the distillery.  "When we started, our core mission was to produce the finest rye whisky possible.  Constellation understands that core mission, and shares our business values."

Fisher & Company, of Menlo Park, California, initiated the transaction and advised Catoctin Creek in closing the deal with Constellation.  The core management team of Scott and Becky Harris, who founded the distillery in 2009, will remain the same.  The company expects to begin expansion in early 2017, and will continue to operate out of its 120 W. Now in the September 2016 Issue

Gorgeous new copper/henna appearance; impeccably clean and clear.  Initial whiffs encounter sturdy aromas rife with dry rye cereal, black pepper, oak sawdust, lead pencil, newly tanned leather, honey... a vibrant, animated bouquet that pleases... almost oloroso sherry-like, and amazingly not in the least aggressive with the abv. ... This supple, distinctive rye is Catoctin's pinnacle achievement, thus far.  Do what you have to do to buy a bottle...or two.

Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal is considered one of the most definitive guides to reviews in the spirits industry.  It is mailed to U.S. and overseas subscribers each March, June, September, and December. Press Release: Virginia ABC approves direct sales to restaurants

SPECIAL ORDERING IS OBSOLETE!

Restaurants and mixed-beverage licensees can now purchase spirits directly from the distillery!

Purcellville, Virginia (August 4, 2016) – The Virginia ABC has approved direct sales from distilleries to Virginia restaurants, bars, and other mixed-beverage licensees.  This process will operate exactly the same as it does when restaurants purchase from their designated ABC stores:  the spirits will be priced at the same ABC prices as in the stores, sales tax will not be charged at the sale, and the bottles will be marked with a sticker to ensure compliance with ABC rules.

"This is a great step forward!" remarked Scott Harris, founder of the distillery.  "We have—for some time now—received numerous requests from restaurants, especially for our special releases, which have not been feasible to deliver through the ABC special order system.  Too many times, special orders were lost, unfulfilled or rerouted, so the system just didn't work well for small-batch special releases."

Beginning this month, restaurants desiring special releases need only to contact the distillery to get what they want.  A simple one-page form is filled out, and the products are delivered or picked up.

Current listed products already in the ABC system will still be available from their local ABC stores, including:

  • Roundstone Rye (27030)
  • Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" (27018)
  • Watershed Gin (29760)

Special releases now available through direct ordering are:

  • Roundstone Rye "Cask Proof" (seasonal availability)
  • Rabble Rouser 4yo Straight Rye Whisky (seasonal availability)
  • 1757 Virginia Brandy
  • Pearousia Pear Brandy
  • Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy
  • Quarter Branch Apple Brandy (seasonal availability)
  • Private barrel releases (inquire for more details)
  • Old Tom Watershed Gin (seasonal availability)
  • Single Malt Releases (e.g. Kings Mountain, seasonal availability)
  • Mosby's Spirit

Mr. Harris added, "I'd just like to thank the entire team at the Virginia ABC for listening to the growing industry of craft distillers and coming up with a solution that works great for everyone.  As of today, we'll have greater selection at Virginia restaurants, more revenue for the state of Virginia, and more revenue for the craft distillers in Virginia, with very little additional cost of administration.  It is truly a win-win for all involved, including the end customer desiring more variety."

Press Release: Catoctin Creek named in Icons of Whisky 2016

Catoctin Creek receives honors for Craft Producer, Master Distiller and Brand Ambassador of the Year

Icons of Whisky Awards 2016

Purcellville, VA (January 29, 2016)Whisky Magazine recently announced their Icons of Whisky awards, and in the American division, Catoctin Creek Distilling Company was shortlisted for three of the awards:

  • Craft Producer of the Year
  • Master Distiller of the Year (Becky Harris)
  • Brand Ambassador of the Year (Chad Robinson)

"While we weren't ultimately selected for the final awards," remarked Scott Harris, founder of the distillery, "to be included in the shortlist among such great industry names is an honor indeed for which we're very proud!"

From the Icons of Whisky web site:

The Icons of Whisky Awards are an internationally recognized set of awards covering all aspects of the whisky industry, from retail to production.  Whisky Magazine celebrated the finest companies and individuals in the whisky industry with our annual Icons of Whisky awards, a highlight in the whisky calendar.

With new categories for this year, including Master Distiller / Master Blender, Travel Retailer and World Whisky Ambassador to name a few, there is no doubt that some new names will come in to the mix. 2015 saw the launch of a new nominations and voting process where we invited producers, retailers, distributors and importers to have their say and help our editorial panel identify those deserving of an Icons title. Now familiar with the online process, the industry has once again spoken and left us with the unenviable task of making the final decision.

Over 800 people gathered tonight to pay tribute to 176 Good Food Award Winners of 2016. By the majestic Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco Bay numerous farmers, chefs, journalists, and activists united to celebrate the exceptional food crafters including luminaries Alice Waters, Nell Newman and Slow Food Founder, Carlo Petrini, who presented the awards.

The winners harken from 33 states, having risen to the top amongst 1,937 entries in a blind tasting with 203 judges held in September. The highest scoring entries were submitted to a rigorous vetting process to verify they met the sustainability and social responsibility criteria to win a Good Food Awards – with over two dozen ultimately disqualified. This year’s winners represent the forefront of American craft food, making products that are delicious, respectful of the environment, and connected to communities and cultural traditions.

Accepting the award for Catoctin Creek was founder and chief distiller, Becky Harris.  "We are so happy to receive this Good Food Award," said Becky Harris. "This award is so special:  Not only are the products judged for taste and quality, but they are also judged for sustainability and how they're produced. We are thrilled to win on both taste and sustainability."

As Good Food Awards founder Sarah Weiner noted in her closing remarks: “Twenty years ago, it took travelling across the globe to encounter something so exquisite that it jolted me into seeing the world with new eyes. Now, you are giving people a taste of how good life can be right here on our own soil…changing America’s definition of Good Food.”

The full list of 2016 Good Food Award winners can be found here.

Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye receives national recognition from USA Today

Flagship Roundstone Rye® receives national honor.

November 10, 2015, Purcellville, VA
– Catoctin Creek received national press this week as it's flagship product, Roundstone Rye whisky–a small-batch, single barrel, hand-crafted whisky made from 100% rye–was named one of the ten best whiskeys to be produced outside of Kentucky.

"We were very pleased that Roundstone Rye was included on a list of the 10 best whiskeys to be produced outside of Kentucky," said Scott Harris, founder and distiller from Catoctin Creek. "Once again, Roundstone Rye is being recognized for it's excellence alongside some of the best craft spirits in America today."

From the article:

"Roundstone Rye is made from 100% rye, and unlike many craft brands, we make it from scratch here in Purcellville (never bought from larger company liquor stocks). Each batch is lovingly made from 100% rye, fermented on site, distilled and then aged in Minnesota white oak. This care to the craft ensures we deliver a gorgeous single-barrel whisky that emulates pre-Prohibition style rye whisky of the early 1900s."

Catoctin Creek announces release of Rabble Rouser 4 year old straight rye whisky

This is the one you've been waiting for!

October 19, 2015, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek is proud to announce the release of its oldest whisky to date:  Rabble Rouser® 4 year old straight rye whisky.

Rabble Rouser is the latest rye whisky offering from Catoctin Creek.  Distilled from 100% rye, and like the other whisky from Catoctin Creek, Rabble Rouser is a single barrel, hand-crafted whisky.  The Rabble Rouser differs from its cousin, Roundstone Rye, in that it is distilled at a lower proof, allowing lots of earthy goodness from the grain to come through in the spirit.  The whisky is aged for four years in Minnesota white oak barrel, twice the legal age requirement for "straight rye whiskey."  It is bottled at 100 proof.

"Where Roundstone Rye is sort of restrained, with lots of fruit and elegance, Rabble Rouser is more unruly and vivacious," says Scott Harris, founder of the distillery, "There's a burst of rich rye spice and sweet woodiness that dominates this whisky."

"At four years old, Catoctin Creek is one of just a few craft distilleries producing rye whiskey of that age," says Jake Emen, who writes for Washington City Paper.

2015 Roundstone Rye Cask Proof Releases - TWO Amazing Expressions

September 24, 2015, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek is proud to announce the release of two of our newest expressions of Roundstone Rye Cask Proof!  The Roundstone Rye has won gold medals from San Francisco to New York to London, and was recently called a “huge rye” and “great fun” in the 2015 edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.  And now, we have two versions to share at cask proof.

Cask Proof 2015 ReleasesThe first expression is our Roundstone Rye "Maple Finished" Cask Proof, where we've taken those old maple-syrup barrels from the Langdon Wood maple syrup that we sell in our tasting room, and we re-filled them with whisky.  The result is not cloying or sweet, but a smooth maple flavor that blends perfectly into the whisky, and a maple finish that goes on, and on, and on, and on...  Only 26 cases will be available in the tasting room for sale!

The second expression is our Roundstone Rye "Peach Brandy Finished" Cask Proof, where we've taken one of our spent peach brandy barrels and finished the whisky in that barrel.  In this case, again, the subtle fruitiness of the peach comes into the mid-palate, and a sweet peachy finish closes out the whisky.  Only 8 (yes, EIGHT) cases are available in the tasting room for sale!  This one will absolutely sell out right away, so please get yours ASAP to ensure you get some.

Both whisky expressions will also be released in limited quantities into the Maryland, DC, and California markets.  Be sure to check our Whiskey Wednesday in DC schedule for your chance to get a free tasting of these newest expressions!  Details, here:  http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/events/1118-introducing-whisky-wednesdays-with-catoctin-creek

CATOCTIN CREEK DISTILLERY’S BECKY HARRIS WINS WCR: WOMEN CHEFS & RESTAURATEUR ‘GOLDEN GOBLET’ AWARD AT “WOMEN WHO INSPIRE” AWARDS GALA IN NYC ON APRIL 20TH

April 22, 2015, Purcellville, VA – On Monday, April 20th, amongst a sea of hundreds of some of the most celebrated women in the hospitality industry nationwide, Becky Harris, co-owner and chief distiller at Catoctin Creek Distillery, received the WCR Golden Goblet Service Award at the 2015 WCR: Women Chefs & Restaurateurs’ “Women Who Inspire” Awards Gala hosted in New York City. The award recognizes excellence in the beverage profession and honors a woman whose making or serving of beer, wine, spirits, coffee or tea enhances the dining experience.

Becky and husband and business partner Scott Harris launched the award-winning Catoctin Creek Distillery – the first distillery to open in Loudoun County, Virginia since before prohibition – in 2009.  Becky Harris is one of less than a dozen female distiller-operators in the United States. A chemical engineer and graduate with honors from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Becky has worked at companies like Amoco, YDK America, and CIBA, specializing in industrial processes and production systems. Eventually after her husband brought the idea of opening a distillery to the table several years ago, Becky’s background has since played a major role in taking her knowledge and applying it to something she loved – making the finest distilled spirits in Virginia.

"It was such an honor not only attend the awards gala surrounded by some of the most talented and respected women in the food and beverage industry, but to receive the Golden Goblet award honoring my work in the spirits industry. I’m just so humbled and grateful to be recognized for such a prestigious award!" said Ms. Harris.

Announcing the Winners of the Catoctin Creek Art Contest

Purcellville, VA, March 29, 2015 — On a crisp Sunday evening, Catoctin Creek held their event to announce the winners in the 2015 Catoctin Creek Art Contest.  A large crowd of artists were present to witness the results:

  • In first place:  "Party at Catoctin Creek", by Randy Krinkles, winning $1000.
  • In second place:  "Case Building Etching in Black", by Paige Ulvi, winning $500.
  • In third place:  "Distillery Vats", by Dora Ramirez, winning $250.

The winning entries were selected from among 141 entrants to the contest.  The selection process was done using blind ballots by the employees of the Purcellville distillery, and the results were tabulated to find the winners.  Also attending the event were representatives for the Loudoun Arts Council and the Round Hill Arts Center, both of whom received donations from the distillery and patrons of the event.

"Choosing the winning entries was really difficult," remarked founder and president, Becky Harris.  "There were so many styles and so many wonderful pieces; honestly, I wish we could have chosen ten or twelve winners!"

The contest was created to foster arts in the community, and the distillery received a diverse set of entries, including photography, paintings, mixed-media, charcoal drawings, etchings, pottery, and watercolors.  All entries in the contest will be on display at the distillery now and throughout the month of April.  Now that the contest voting period is over, the artists' names will be placed on each piece so that they may receive recognition for their work.  The general public is invited to view the pieces at Catoctin Creek's Main Street location in Purcellville.

"We were really pleased with the results of this contest," said Scott Harris, founder and general manager of the distillery.  "The art we received is top notch, showing we live in a county rich with the arts."  During the evening event, Scott spoke further about the need for arts in the community: "There is so much discussion today in our news and in politics, both on the left and the right, about the need for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) based-education and job-training.  In the process, arts and humanities are being cut back and removed from our public curricula.  I think it does our country and our people a disservice to focus solely on STEM without the respect and time due to the humanities.  Humanities enrich our lives in ways far beyond mere physical wealth.  That is one reason that we wanted to hold this contest, to encourage those out there who don't fit into the typical STEM philosophy."

After the success of Catoctin Creek's first art contest, look for it to return in 2016.

Catoctin Creek Receives Awards from San Francisco and New York

Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" receives Silver Medal at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and 87 point rating at Ultimate Spirits Challenge

SFWSC Silver  USC 87 Points

Purcellville, VA, March 28, 2015 — In the same week, Catoctin Creek Distilling Company has been awarded two medals for its Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" whisky from two of the top international spirits judging contests:  a silver medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) and an 87 point rating (Very Good, Strong Recommendation) from F. Paul Pacult's Ultimate Spirits Challenge (USC) in New York City.  Both competitions are very well regarded as some of the most impartial and well attended competitions in the world.

From the USC review:

Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" - Very pretty pale gold color. Big, bright, floral aromas followed in the mouth by a huge blast of sweet grain and spice. This one goes to 11! The finish leans toward bitter almond and spice, and then the floral elements return. 87 points - Very Good, Strong Recommendation

"We are very excited by this happy news:  two medals in one week!" remarked Scott Harris, founder and general manager at Catoctin Creek.  "These two competitions are the gold standards for spirits judging, receiving thousands of entrants from across the industry worldwide.  To be selected for these medals, in competitions that perform completely blind tastings, shows that our spirits truly stand up to the international standard and are truly among the best in the world!"

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is regarded as the most respected spirits competition in the world. The Competition was the first comprehensive, international spirits judging ever held in the United States on an annual basis. Products are evaluated by top spirits professionals and are judged in a blind, consensual procedure ensuring competitive integrity and making this annual competition the most reputable and recognized competition in the spirits industry.

Ultimate Beverage Challenge is the definitive spirits and wine evaluation company today. Its two world-class competitions Ultimate Spirits Challenge and Ultimate Wine Challenge provide unparalleled value, offering results that are reliable and easily understandable in today’s marketplace, creating opportunities for the industry, and establishing the platinum standard that defines what beverage evaluation should be.

From the review:

Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" - Amber color. Bright, fruity, spicy aromas of spumoni gelato, beeswax candle, cedar spice rack, and burnt sugar with a supple, racy, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a peppery, intriguing, medium-long nutmeg, pink pepper, dried fruits, and chili pepper finish. A very spice forward rye that will pop in cocktails. 87 points - Highly Recommended - Silver

Press Release: Catoctin Creek now available in California

Arriving in March, 2015 in the Golden State.

February 23, 2015, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek expanded its distribution into California through JVS Imports, a wine and spirits importer and wholesaler located in South San Francisco.  Initially, the Purcellville distillery will ship its award winning Roundstone Rye and Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" into the California market.

"This is a watershed day for us, since California is one of the biggest and most significant markets in the US," said Scott Harris, founder of the distillery.  "We've waited quite some time before feeling like we were ready for the west coast again. We feel JVS will be an excellent partner in distribution into the state."

This marks the return of the Virginia distillery into the California market.  Originally in California in 2010, the company later pulled back from the state to focus on local markets like Virginia, DC, and Maryland.  "Now, with the expanded capacity of the new distillery on Main Street in Purcellville, we feel we have the product supply to move into California more confidently," said Mr. Harris.

"We at JVS Imports are delighted to be adding the Catoctin Creek selection of products to our existing portfolio of American Craft Spirits," said Sam Filmus, president of JVS Imports.  "This multi-award winning distillery offers the finest spirits available. The JVS Team is excited to introduce the line to California's fine spirits consumers."

Initial distribution will start around the southern California area before moving into the rest of the state.

Chad and the Old Tom gin!February 12, 2015, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek is pleased to announce the limited release of our Pearousia Barrel "Old Tom" style Watershed Gin.  We took our regular, award-winning Watershed Gin, and set some aside for a time to rest in a re-used Pearousia pear brandy barrel.  The result is a golden, rich, and surprisingly fruity gin which gleams in those cocktails made for Old Tom gins, like the famous Ramos Gin Fizz.*

"This entire product is the work of our brand ambassador, Chad Robinson," said Scott Harris, founder of the distillery.  "Chad came to us with the idea, and begged us to reserve a couple spent Pearousia barrels for him.  We filled them with gin, let them rest, and when the time was right--and the flavors were at their peak--we pulled the gin from the barrel to bottle it.  The result is very exciting!"

There will only be 344 bottles available for sale, which will be evenly divided between Catoctin Creek Distillery's tasting room, and the Maryland / Washington DC market served by Bacchus Importers, Ltd.  "Obviously, we expect this to sell out very quickly," added Mr. Robinson. "If you're in the DC area, I'll be pouring tastings at Weygandt Wines in Cleveland Park on March 14th."

Each 750 mL bottle is bottled at 92.4 proof (46.2% ABV).  The Virginia ABC price is $50.90.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Holds Steady Virginia Pricing; Lowers Prices on White Spirits

Loudoun County distillery absorbs Virginia ABC mark-up; Mosby's Spirit and Watershed Gin prices will drop

November 25, 2014, Purcellville, VA – Despite the increase in mark-ups recently announced by the Virginia ABC board, Catoctin Creek will hold steady its retail pricing, essentially absorbing the cost of the mark-ups at the wholesale level and shielding the consumer from the price mark-up for its own products.  The retail price on Watershed Gin and Mosby's Spirit, the distillery's "white" spirits category, will be further reduced.

"We felt it was unfair to push another price increase to the consumers in a state that already sees the third highest liquor mark-up in the country," remarked Scott Harris, founder of the distillery.  "This time, we've decided to absorb the mark-up increases to hold our prices essentially steady so our customers do not feel this pain."

The distillery will still see minor changes in their pricing due to the Virginia ABC's new policy of "rounding to the nines," which means all pricing within the ABC system will be rounded up to nine cents in the last digit.  (For example, a product that once cost $34.15 would become $34.19.)

Catoctin Creek's new per-bottle retail pricing in Virginia, will be as follows:

  • Roundstone Rye "80 proof" - $44.99
  • Roundstone Rye "92 proof" - $52.79
  • Mosby's Spirit - $29.49 (new lower price)
  • Watershed Gin - $34.19 (new lower price)
  • 1757 Virginia Brandy - $49.99
  • Pearousia Pear Brandy - $42.49
  • Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy - $42.49

As required by law, the pricing at the distillery store will match the Virginia ABC system pricing.  New pricing becomes effective December 8, 2014.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Announces Commemorative Pear Brandy Bottle

Pearousia Pear Brandy with Pear in the Bottle to Commemorate Five Year Anniversary!

PearousiaOctober 14, 2014, Purcellville, VA – To commemorate the five year anniversary of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, the Purcellville distillery is releasing twenty four hand-filled, hand-numbered bottles of seasonal "Pearousia" pear brandy with a full pear in each bottle.

"This bottling is very special," says Catoctin Creek founder, Scott Harris.  "In 2009, Becky and I established the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since Prohibition, and the first alcohol we produced was pear brandy.  The day our equipment was operational, we reached out to Doug Fabbioli, proprietor of Fabbioli Cellars, and asked him for help in obtaining something to distill.  He graciously offered us some of his pear wine, which ultimately became Catoctin Creek's Pearousia pear brandy.  Pearousia was the first distillate ever produced at Catoctin Creek. Our success was only possible through the pioneering work already done in Loudoun County by Doug Fabbioli."

Pearousia"If it weren't for Doug, we wouldn't be where we are today," said Becky Harris, chief distiller and founder of the distillery. "His generosity of spirit and can-do attitude inspired us and helped get us over the hump in starting our business!"

"Working with Becky and Scott at Catoctin Creek Distillery has been a great experience," said Doug Fabbioli, owner of Fabbioli Cellars.  "Our collaboration has helped both our businesses as well as created a model for other operations to expand the rural economy and continue using locally grown crops in more products."

PearousiaThis release of Pearousia pear brandy, each bottle containing an Asian pear, is released at 750ml.  Early in the spring, each bottle was attached to the pear trees at Patent House Farm Orchard in Lovettsville, Virginia, where the pollinated blossom inside the bottle was allowed to grow into a full-grown pear.  Fast forward to summer, when the ripened pears were cut from the trees and the bottles filled with Pearousia pear brandy.  Each bottle is individually numbered and signed by Scott and Becky Harris, and also signed by Doug Fabbioli.

Catoctin Creek Pearousia "Pear in the Bottle" will be available for $149 only at the Purcellville distillery starting October 14th.  No call in orders will be accepted.  Only customers arriving at the distillery will have the opportunity to purchase this rare release.

2014 Roundstone Rye Cask Proof Release - Brandy Barrel Rye

September 18, 2014, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek is proud to announce the release of our newest expression of Roundstone Rye Cask Proof!  Bottled at 59.8% alcohol by volume, or 119.6 proof, this is one seriously strong dram of whisky!

This expression of cask proof is very special. Starting with our classic single-barrel Roundstone Rye, using 100% eco-ganic rye, and as always, made by us, this expression was aged first in Minnesota white oak and then finished in a Bordeaux red wine barrel that previously aged our 1757 Virginia Brandy. This expression, batch B14E3, is dark, almost reddish in color, with a deep woody, caramel taste with that characteristic rye snap, and a noticeably fruity nose from the presence of the grape. Truly spectacular, and only 283 bottles of this one were produced. It will not last!

Roundstone Rye Cask Proof will be released at the Purcellville distillery on Oct. 19 for VIP members and Nov. 1 for the general public.  Information on VIP Club may be found here:  http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/vip-club

Catoctin Creek Cask Proof was called a “huge rye” and “great fun” in the 2014 edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

Limited amounts of this expression will also be released into our markets in New York, Maryland, DC, Massachusetts.

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company expands capacity with new bottling line

Distillery expands bottling capacity ten-fold to allow future growth and new opportunities.

Bottling LineJuly 28, 2014, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek Distilling Company has installed a new semi-automated bottling line.  The system, manufactured by Liquid Packaging Solutions of LaPorte, Indiana, is 100% American-made and will allow the distillery to greatly increase their bottling capacity.

"This is a big improvement in our overall production process," said Becky Harris, President, Distiller, and Chief of Production.  "While we have spare production capacity in our potstills and fermenters, our bottling capacity was quickly becoming an issue.  It was literally the bottleneck in our process."

The new bottling system will allow the distillery to bottle approximately 10,000 or more bottles per month, a dramatic increase over current production.  Further, the distillery will now have the capacity to offer bottling services to local beverage producers (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

The award-winning distillery has become known for its community volunteer bottling days, and while the new equipment will allow the distillery to bottle the majority of their products more quickly, they still plan to host bottling workshops on a quasi-monthly basis.

Bottling Line

"Since we started five years ago, the bottling workshops have been a fun way to connect with customers and to provide a hands-on experience for our fans," said Scott Harris, Founder of the distillery. "For that reason, we will continue to do them.  The workshops are so much fun, and we get a lot of positive feedback from people when we do them."

The bottling line should be fully operational by the end of the month.  Look for the new bottling line to be included on tours starting this weekend.

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company announces launch of 92-proof Roundstone Rye – Available May 2014

Distillery Diversifies Portfolio with Raised Proof Option from Hand-Selected Barrels

Roundstone Rye 92April 30, 2014, Purcellville, VA – Beginning in May, Catoctin Creek has announced that it will release a new higher-proof expression of Roundstone Rye at 92 proof.  Unlike the cask proof variant which is released only a few times per year, Roundstone Rye 92 will be a new regular offering from the celebrated Purcellville distillery.

"The release of a premium, 92-proof version of their award-winning 80-proof Roundstone Rye Whisky, hitting shelves in May, is recognizably Roundstone but intensified, with the caramel, maple, and spice tones highlighted and pumped up into something richer," noted M. Carrie Allan, spirits writer for the Washington Post. (See the full article in the Post, here.)

This whisky is the culmination of several years of planning.  "For a few years now, we've been putting whisky away for storage," remarked Becky Harris, Chief Distiller and President of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company.  "We pulled some of the more interesting barrels from the back of the barn and decided to release these at a higher proof:  a whisky specially curated for flavor, while still being remarkably smooth, as is our existing 80 proof Roundstone."

"We are very excited about this new product," said Scott Harris, Founder and General Manager of Catoctin Creek.  "We discussed this new product with customers like Jack Rose Whisky Saloon, The Passenger, and our distributors, and all agreed that this would be a great new product for the distillery.  And what's cool, since we're a small distillery, we can be responsive to this kind of market input."

At 92 proof (46% ABV), "Roundstone Rye 92" will be available in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and New York in May.  As with all the whisky at Catoctin Creek, Roundstone Rye 92 is certified eco-ganic and kosher.  Suggested retail price is $52.99 for a 750 ml bottle.  Though an exact date hasn't been set, bottles will be available at the distillery approximately May 17th.

Single Cask Nation releases first American whisky: Catoctin Creek Rye

Single Cask Nation LabelMarch 21, 2014, Purcellville, VA –  Jewish Whisky Company’s Single Cask Nation today announced it will release its first American whisky bottling, a special cask of Catoctin Creek rye whisky aged over two years.

Jewish Whisky Company built the Single Cask Nation community so that whisky enthusiasts can meet and advance their mutual affinity for finely crafted single cask spirits. Single Cask Nation is dedicated to independently bottling the best and most unique single casks for its membership.

"We sat down together a few months ago and together selected a very special whisky," said Scott Harris, founder of Catoctin Creek Distillery. "The chosen barrel contained a very unique distillation from August 2011. It was aged in a bourbon barrel for just over a year, and after that, we moved the whisky to a used white wine cask, where it has aged for almost another year and a half. The result is a whisky unlike anything we've offered to date."

The tasting notes on the whisky mention an intense rye profile, yellow and red fruits intertwined with herbal notes, a beguiling oily texture and warm toffee flavors.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to partner with Catoctin Creek on this whisky," commented Jason Johnstone-Yellin, co-founder of Jewish Whisky Company. "Becky and Scott produce some gorgeous spirits; we'd been pouring alongside them for years at various whisky festivals, and over the years we've become friends. We are delighted to bottle Catoctin Creek as the first American offering for Single Cask Nation."

The Single Cask Nation Catoctin Creek expression will be bottled at cask strength with approximately 200 bottles available. While the bottles will only be available to the members of Single Cask Nation, anyone can join via their website (www.singlecasknation.com).

1757 Virginia BrandyShort Hill Peach BrandyOctober 24, 2013, Purcellville, VA – Just in time for the holidays, Catoctin Creek is thrilled to announce the seasonal releases of is Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy and 1757 Virginia Brandy.  Last year, both of these brandies sold out in a very short period of time.  This year, we have increased our production and will have more bottles to offer.

On November 2 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release the Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy from their tasting room on Main Street in Purcellville.  The peach brandy is made entirely from Bluemont peaches, fermented and distilled and then aged in white oak barrels, bottled at 40% ABV.  The peach brandy is not a sweet liqueur, but rather a dry brandy done in the style of something one would find in Germany or France.  There are less than 1000 total bottles of the peach brandy this year, and will be sold exclusively at the distillery tasting room.

On November 16 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release its 1757 Virginia Brandy from the tasting room.  This brandy is made from Seyval blanc and Chambourcin wine grapes from Tarara and Fabbioli Cellars, aged in Bordeaux red wine casks for a minimum of two years, and bottled at 40% ABV.  1757 is the first commercial grape brandy ever produced in the Commonwealth, and around 1100 bottles will be available this year.

"We are always excited to put out our hyper-local fruit brandies," said Becky Harris, owner and chief distiller at Catoctin Creek. "These brandies are collaborations with some of Loudoun's great wineries, like Bluemont, Tarara and Fabbioli, and the results are always wonderful."

Catoctin Creek installs solar array

The Solar Array at Catoctin CreekAugust 27, 2013, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek Distillery has installed a large solar array covering the roof of its new facility on Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia.  The solar array, installed by Prospect Solar of Sterling, Virginia, will offset nearly 85% of the distillery's energy usage, and on very sunny days will return energy into the public grid.

"We are thrilled to have our new solar plant," said Scott Harris, owner and general manager of the distillery. "Since we began the distillery, we always looked for ways to improve our sustainability and green footprint.  We already recycle all of our waste from the distilling process by making alcohol cleanser and eco-ganic cattle feeds. With the new solar plant, we are able to continue this process by reducing our energy footprint.  Prospect Solar has been an excellent partner in this project."

The Case Building, which the distillery now calls home, is a nearly perfect site for solar because of its southern-facing, gently sloping roof.

"We are honored to work with Catoctin Creek Distillery, a small business leading by example in terms of sustainability," said Jim Stamer, President of Prospect Solar.  "The majority of their operation will be powered by a 41kW rooftop solar array that is large enough to offset the electricity of about five average households. Their business will benefit from lower operating costs, and hedge against rising utility rates for at least 25 years. All of the solar equipment to be used in the installation has been manufactured in the U.S.A.  Not only does Catoctin Creek produce local spirits, but they will also be producing local renewable energy for generations to come."

About Prospect Solar:  Prospect Solar, LLC was established in 2010 as the professional's choice for design/build solar photovoltaic energy system installation. May 15, 2013, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek was awarded "Virginia's Finest®" designation for flagship line of spirits, including Roundstone Rye, Mosby's Spirit, and Watershed Gin.

Virginia's FinestThe Virginia’s Finest program promotes the development of Virginia agriculture and specialty food products. Virginia's Finest highlights top quality Virginia-produced and processed products, including snacks, candy, nuts, cider, meats, and produce. The Virginia's Finest Program is one of the most highly regarded marketing vehicles in the Commonwealth and really gives Virginia companies an added advantage in the marketplace. Consumers recognize the familiar Virginia's Finest "checkmark" and trust that Virginia's Finest products have been deemed the best of the best.

"The Virginia’s Finest Trademark Program will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2014, and adding a celebrated Virginia distilling company such as Catoctin Creek to the list of Virginia’s Finest® product offerings is a win for everyone. I commend Catoctin Creek for their commitment to providing high quality locally made products," said Matt Lohr, Commissioner for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Only Virginia products that meet or exceed quality standards are part of the Virginia's Finest Program. Specific industries recommend, create and update the quality standards. All Virginia's Finest products must be approved by the Virginia's Finest Review Committee. The Committee reviews product packaging and labels to ensure products meet state and federal regulations. The Committee verifies that products meet or exceed the standards established by the industry. In the case of many products, the company must be inspected by Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).

"Virginia is a great place to live and work, and we are proud that our products rank in the top with the rest of Virginia's Finest," said Scott Harris, owner of the Catoctin Creek Distillery.  "People recognize the Virginia's Finest brand, and we are thrilled to associate that brand with our spirits."

Catoctin Creek Begins Construction of New Facility

Purcellville, VA – On Monday, April 1, Catoctin Creek® began construction on their new facility, located at 120 W. Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia.  The four year old distillery has recently outgrown its space on Richardson Lane, and last year purchased the historic Case Building on Main Street to begin its expansion.

Construction at the Case BuildingThe construction process was bid out to five contractors throughout the region.  Ultimately, Mullally Construction Company, Inc. (MCCI) was chosen as the general contractor for the more than $500,000 expansion and restoration project.  The project has become quite complex, with renovation of the historic building becoming one of the primary goals of the construction project.

"What we have is a historic building that was built in the second year of Prohibition," notes Scott Harris, founder of the distillery. "The building has been neglected through the years, and we would like to rejuvenate this jewel on Main Street."

Improvements to the building include a completely new electrical system, new plumbing, a sprinkler system, masonry repairs, roofing repairs, and new HVAC systems.

"In addition to that, it is still our goal to place a solar array on the roof to reduce our energy consumption," says Mr. Harris. "What we aim to build is the greenest building in the Town of Purcellville."

Other green efforts include installing a new glycol system to reduce water consumption, LED lights, and other energy saving innovations.

"Mullally Construction are ready to get started on this exciting project," said Peter Mullally, CEO of MCCI. "This is a win for the County, Town, MCCI and Catoctin Creek!"

Construction should last from April to mid-June, with an expected opening in late-June, provided there are no big surprises in the building.  During the construction phase, normal production and touring operations will continue at the company's present facility at 37251C East Richardson Lane in northern Purcellville.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye obtains GOLD at the 2013 Good Food Awards

Gold Seal at the Good Food Awards 2013Roundstone RyeSan Francisco, CA (January 18, 2013) – The Good Food Awards has awarded Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye a gold seal in their 2013 spirits category, one of 182 finalists across nine industries, from 31 states, chosen from among 1,366 entries.  Awards were presented by Alice Waters, famed chef of Chez Pannise and prominent activist for the local food movement.

"The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced," said Christina Skonberg, operations manager for the Good Food Awards.  "For a long time, certifications for responsible food production and awards for superior taste have remained distinct—one honors social and environmental responsibility, while the other celebrates flavor. The Good Food Awards recognize that truly good food—the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities—contains all of these ingredients."

Gold Seals were given to producers whose winning products are either certified ọṙḡạṇịc themselves or are 100% comprised of certified ọṙḡạṇịc ingredients.  Accepting the award in person, at San Francisco's historic Ferry Building, were Scott and Becky Harris, the founders of Catoctin Creek.

Scott and Becky Harris with Alice Waters"We are honored and delighted to receive this award," said Becky Harris. "This award is unlike many others, in that first, the products are judged for taste and quality.  Once evaluated for quality, a determination is made on the sustainability of the products and the companies that produce them. We are thrilled to win on both factors."

In geographic trends this year, Washington, D.C. is emerging as a hub of Good Food, with 14 Finalists hailing from its food shed of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Colorado (10), Washington state (10), Wisconsin (9) and Texas (9) all had strong showings. California had the largest number of finalists (43), followed by Oregon (22) and New York (16).

About the Good Food Awards: Now in its third year, Good Food Awards are given to winners in nine categories: beer, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, coffee, confections, pickles, preserves and spirits. The Good Food Awards Seal, found on winning products, assures consumers they have found something exceptionally delicious that also supports sustainability and social good. The Good Food Awards Gold Seal marks the products of winners who have also obtained certified ọṙḡạṇịc status while also leading in taste and social responsibility.
