Catoctin Creek releases Peach and Grape Brandy

1757 Virginia BrandyShort Hill Peach BrandyOctober 24, 2013, Purcellville, VA – Just in time for the holidays, Catoctin Creek is thrilled to announce the seasonal releases of is Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy and 1757 Virginia Brandy.  Last year, both of these brandies sold out in a very short period of time.  This year, we have increased our production and will have more bottles to offer.

On November 2 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release the Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy from their tasting room on Main Street in Purcellville.  The peach brandy is made entirely from Bluemont peaches, fermented and distilled and then aged in white oak barrels, bottled at 40% ABV.  The peach brandy is not a sweet liqueur, but rather a dry brandy done in the style of something one would find in Germany or France.  There are less than 1000 total bottles of the peach brandy this year, and will be sold exclusively at the distillery tasting room.

On November 16 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release its 1757 Virginia Brandy from the tasting room.  This brandy is made from Seyval blanc and Chambourcin wine grapes from Tarara and Fabbioli Cellars, aged in Bordeaux red wine casks for a minimum of two years, and bottled at 40% ABV.  1757 is the first commercial grape brandy ever produced in the Commonwealth, and around 1100 bottles will be available this year.

"We are always excited to put out our hyper-local fruit brandies," said Becky Harris, owner and chief distiller at Catoctin Creek. "These brandies are collaborations with some of Loudoun's great wineries, like Bluemont, Tarara and Fabbioli, and the results are always wonderful."

Catoctin Creek Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy - 40% ABV, 375ml, SRP $42.30. Star-K certified.

Catoctin Creek 1757 Virginia Brandy - 40% ABV, 750ml, SRP $49.80.

Catoctin Creek installs solar array

The Solar Array at Catoctin CreekAugust 27, 2013, Purcellville, VA – Catoctin Creek Distillery has installed a large solar array covering the roof of its new facility on Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia.  The solar array, installed by Prospect Solar of Sterling, Virginia, will offset nearly 85% of the distillery's energy usage, and on very sunny days will return energy into the public grid.

"We are thrilled to have our new solar plant," said Scott Harris, owner and general manager of the distillery. "Since we began the distillery, we always looked for ways to improve our sustainability and green footprint.  We already recycle all of our waste from the distilling process by making alcohol cleanser and eco-ganic cattle feeds. With the new solar plant, we are able to continue this process by reducing our energy footprint.  Prospect Solar has been an excellent partner in this project."

The Case Building, which the distillery now calls home, is a nearly perfect site for solar because of its southern-facing, gently sloping roof.

"We are honored to work with Catoctin Creek Distillery, a small business leading by example in terms of sustainability," said Jim Stamer, President of Prospect Solar.  "The majority of their operation will be powered by a 41kW rooftop solar array that is large enough to offset the electricity of about five average households. Their business will benefit from lower operating costs, and hedge against rising utility rates for at least 25 years. All of the solar equipment to be used in the installation has been manufactured in the U.S.A.  Not only does Catoctin Creek produce local spirits, but they will also be producing local renewable energy for generations to come."

About Prospect Solar:  Prospect Solar, LLC was established in 2010 as the professional's choice for design/build solar photovoltaic energy system installation. We draw from the construction industry experiences of our sister company, Prospect Waterproofing Company. Catoctin Creek Begins Construction of New Facility

Purcellville, VA – On Monday, April 1, Catoctin Creek® began construction on their new facility, located at 120 W. Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia.  The four year old distillery has recently outgrown its space on Richardson Lane, and last year purchased the historic Case Building on Main Street to begin its expansion.

Construction at the Case BuildingThe construction process was bid out to five contractors throughout the region.  Ultimately, Mullally Construction Company, Inc. (MCCI) was chosen as the general contractor for the more than $500,000 expansion and restoration project.  The project has become quite complex, with renovation of the historic building becoming one of the primary goals of the construction project.

"What we have is a historic building that was built in the second year of Prohibition," notes Scott Harris, founder of the distillery. "The building has been neglected through the years, and we would like to rejuvenate this jewel on Main Street."

Improvements to the building include a completely new electrical system, new plumbing, a sprinkler system, masonry repairs, roofing repairs, and new HVAC systems.

"In addition to that, it is still our goal to place a solar array on the roof to reduce our energy consumption," says Mr. Harris. "What we aim to build is the greenest building in the Town of Purcellville."

Other green efforts include installing a new glycol system to reduce water consumption, LED lights, and other energy saving innovations.

"Mullally Construction are ready to get started on this exciting project," said Peter Mullally, CEO of MCCI. "This is a win for the County, Town, MCCI and Catoctin Creek!"

Construction should last from April to mid-June, with an expected opening in late-June, provided there are no big surprises in the building.  During the construction phase, normal production and touring operations will continue at the company's present facility at 37251C East Richardson Lane in northern Purcellville.

Press Release: Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye obtains GOLD at the 2013 Good Food Awards

Gold Seal at the Good Food Awards 2013Roundstone RyeSan Francisco, CA (January 18, 2013) – The Good Food Awards has awarded Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye a gold seal in their 2013 spirits category, one of 182 finalists across nine industries, from 31 states, chosen from among 1,366 entries.  Awards were presented by Alice Waters, famed chef of Chez Pannise and prominent activist for the local food movement.

"The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced," said Christina Skonberg, operations manager for the Good Food Awards.  "For a long time, certifications for responsible food production and awards for superior taste have remained distinct—one honors social and environmental responsibility, while the other celebrates flavor. The Good Food Awards recognize that truly good food—the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities—contains all of these ingredients."

Gold Seals were given to producers whose winning products are either certified ọṙḡạṇịc themselves or are 100% comprised of certified ọṙḡạṇịc ingredients.  Accepting the award in person, at San Francisco's historic Ferry Building, were Scott and Becky Harris, the founders of Catoctin Creek.

Scott and Becky Harris with Alice Waters"We are honored and delighted to receive this award," said Becky Harris. "This award is unlike many others, in that first, the products are judged for taste and quality.  Once evaluated for quality, a determination is made on the sustainability of the products and the companies that produce them. We are thrilled to win on both factors."

In geographic trends this year, Washington, D.C. is emerging as a hub of Good Food, with 14 Finalists hailing from its food shed of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Colorado (10), Washington state (10), Wisconsin (9) and Texas (9) all had strong showings. California had the largest number of finalists (43), followed by Oregon (22) and New York (16).

About the Good Food Awards: Now in its third year, Good Food Awards are given to winners in nine categories: beer, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, coffee, confections, pickles, preserves and spirits. The Good Food Awards Seal, found on winning products, assures consumers they have found something exceptionally delicious that also supports sustainability and social good. The Good Food Awards Gold Seal marks the products of winners who have also obtained certified ọṙḡạṇịc status while also leading in taste and social responsibility. Press Release: Washington DC's J&G Steakhouse Partners with Virginia's Award-Winning Catoctin Creek Distillery to Unveil Exclusive Handcrafted Custom Whiskey Blend '515'

Catoctin CreekJ+G Steakhouse

One-of-a-Kind Whiskey Marries Award-winning Spirits – Mosby’s Spirit & Roundstone Rye – Available Exclusively at J&G Steakhouse

~~~
Washington DC (October 10, 2012) – Beginning in October, just in time for fall and winter whiskey lovers to enjoy, two of the most celebrated brands in the DC area – J&G Steakhouse at the W Washington DC and Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, Loudoun County’s first distillery since before prohibition – have announced the debut of ‘515’ – a custom handcrafted whiskey produced by Catoctin Creek and made exclusively for J&G Steakhouse. This is the first collaboration of this caliber for either notable brand.
Great minds think alike and that’s exactly how the story goes when it comes to J&G Steakhouse and Catoctin Creek’s recent collaboration to create the one-of-a-kind proprietary whiskey blend. Following an exclusive event hosted by J&G Steakhouse’s Sommelier Guy Golan and Catoctin Creek owner Scott Harris, Golan and Harris began to brainstorm and experiment with the possibility of crafting a private label whiskey. The name – 515 – represents J&G Steakhouse’s prominent and historic address – one of which places it within steps from one of the country’s most famous landmarks - the White House. Showcasing two of Catoctin Creek’s most popular and award-winning eco-ganic and kosher spirits – Mosby’s Spirit and Roundstone Rye – Harris and Guy decided to begin testing and tasting results by combining both of these products. Each bottle of ‘515’ is aged under two years in new oak barrels, and distilled and bottled by hand. Each bottle then comes numbered revealing glimpses of just how much time, care and energy went into crafting this rare product.
“The 515 blend was created to pay homage to the historic location of 515 15th Street NW, Washington DC”, says J&G Steakhouse Sommelier Guy Golan. “During a recent exclusive event we hosted at J&G Steakhouse with Catoctin Creek, we blended Mosby’s Spirit and Roundstone Rye to the approval of an intimate bar crowd, until we achieved the results we wanted; an exclusive whiskey showcasing the unique quality of Catoctin Creek’s eco-ganic spirits.” "This was an exciting and creative opportunity to look at our products in a whole new way", said Scott and Becky Harris, founders and master distillers at Catoctin Creek Distillery. “The tasting notes of this 100% rye blend reveals rich flavors of stone fruit, sugar cane, and leather. It is a truly lovely spirit!"
Catoctin Creek’s 515 custom blend is available only at J&G Steakhouse served in the picturesque main dining room, the cozy Wine Bar, on the patio – recently named as one of the Best Outdoor Dining venues by FoodandWine.com, and also in POV – the W Hotel’s sky-high lounge with beautiful bird’s eye views of the White House. Taking the intricate flavors of the custom blend to the next level, Belinda Chang, Beverage Director for Culinary Concepts Hospitality Group, will be creating and launching a series of handcrafted cocktails showcasing 515. Executive Chef Philippe Reininger is also looking forward to experimenting with 515 to further enhance his impressive line-up of sweet and savory fall dishes of which intertwine French and Asian flavors.
