Catoctin Creek featured in Distilled Magazine

Distilled MagazineDistilled magazine, in their inaugural issue, did a beautiful profile piece on Catoctin Creek.  Our distillery dog, Frank, a precocious pug who serves as part-time security guard, features on half of the photos taken!  Johanna Ngoh writes:

A chemical engineer by training, Becky Harris blinked casually at her husband's suggestion that they quit six-figure day jobs to make whisky.  "OK, I got this," Becky told Scott, unfazed.  "You just need to make sure we can make some money."

The magazine is currently not available online, so if you can pick up a copy, grab one!

Catoctin Creek in Inc Magazine

Inc Magazine

Inc magazine does a feature on craft distillers, and Catoctin Creek featured in the #3 spot of the 26 distilleries profiled. Coeli Carr writes:

Making distilled spirits is an ancient process, and for 21st-century craft distillers--currently there are about 1,000 of them in the U.S., according to the American Distilling Institute--everything old is new again. And profitable. ADI's annual survey estimates that craft sales moved about 2.4 million cases in 2015, about 40 percent more than the previous year. From 2011 through 2015, segment revenue grew more than 40 percent annually.

June 2016 News

Do you know where your whisky is made?

There is a lot of craft whisky in the market today, but much of it is made in a large factory in Indiana and sold a a premium as handmade.  At Catoctin Creek, we didn't get into this business to bottle someone else's whiskey, but to make our own unique whisky from grain to bottle—right here in Purcellville, Virginia. And making whisky has been our passion since 2009.  #truecraft

New Roundstone Rye Cask Proof Release!

Hickory-Finished Whisky now available!

Hickory Cask Rye

As we leave spring and prepare for the hot summer days, we are excited to be a part of your summer get-togethers, parties, and evenings spent enjoying the beauty of the season with our new Roundstone Rye Cask Proof whisky! This special release is our best-selling Roundstone Rye finished in a hickory barrel from Falling Bark Farm in Berryville, Virginia, and is only available twice per year, so get your bottle while they’re still here!

Although the name hickory might sometimes lead people to expect a smoky flavor (as in barbecue sauce), this whisky is more on the tangy side than the smoky side.  The influence of the hickory surprised us when we tasted and bottled this whisky.  It is remarkably smooth, and a nice addition to your cask proof collection.

For more information regarding the Cask Proof, please visit our products page:

Catoctin Creek now on military bases!

As of Memorial Day weekend, our whisky, gin, and 1757 brandy will be sold in Army and Air Force Exchange Stores (AAFES) “Class Six” liquor stores in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and will expand to other AAFES’s throughout Virginia based on the success at Ft. Belvoir. Catoctin Creek will have a brand ambassador present at the fort, giving away complimentary tours and tastings to the service members.

As an army brat myself, I’m proud that Catoctin Creek is serving our men and women in the armed forces as they serve us. My first visit to a liquor store was with my dad in Germany, and is, in a way, where it all began for me as a distiller. This is an excellent opportunity for all of us to appreciate our friends and family in the military.

Cocktail of the Month – Strawberry Jive

Strawberry Jive

DrinkTonight is an absolutely amazing Instagram account based in DC, and featuring fantastic cocktail recipes with various local spirits.  They really enjoy our Watershed Gin, and have featured it four times int he recent past.  I am grateful too that they have graciously allowed me to cross post their beautiful photos and cocktail recipes here for you so share.  Find them on Instagram at

The "Strawberry Jive" is a combination of fruits and herbs that is refreshing, not too sweet, and alight enough for these really hot DC summer days.  Strawberry and basil are a classic combo, too.

2 strawberries
Handful of fresh basil
½ oz agave syrup
1 oz orange juice
Splash of lemon juice
1½ Watershed Gin

Muddle two strawberries, the handful of fresh basil and agave syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker.  Add the orange juice and lemon juice, along with the gin and a handful of ice.  Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with sliced strawberries and basil.

Recipe and photo by DrinkTonight, and used with permission.

See this cocktail and hundreds more on our cocktails page.

In Closing...

As always, there are lots of fun and information on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages, where you can stay up to date with the daily activities at the distillery. We are open every Tuesday through Sunday for tastings and bottle purchases, so stop by and see us sometime!

Virginia Living Cocktails

Virginia Living

Virginia Living magazine did a feature asking local Virginia bartenders to present some of their favorite cocktails.  We were delighted to find ourselves in two of them: I Am Virginia by Todd Thrasher, and The Blue Puppy by Hunter Johnson.

We could all use something tall and cool heading into the summer season. And Virginia's top mixologists are only too happy to oblige. For stylish and delicious cocktails made in true Virginia fashion, try these signature quaffs from bars and restaurants around the state.
