Press Release: Catoctin Creek Distilling Company begins distribution to the United Kingdom with N10 Bourbons Limited

Virginia's most awarded whisky is now available in Great Britain and Northern Ireland

PURCELLVILLE, Va. (Oct. 5, 2020) - - - Catoctin Creek Distilling Co. announces its new partnership with N10 Bourbon Ltd, a national American whiskey distribution company based in the U.K. The full lineup of the craft distillery’s most popular expressions, Roundstone Rye 80 Proof, Roundstone Rye 92 Proof Distiller's Edition, and Roundstone Rye Cask Proof, are now available throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All products are single barrel pot-stilled whiskies made from 100% rye. Special barrel selections and limited releases will also be available in the future.

“I am extremely happy to be partnered with N10 Bourbons Ltd in the U.K.," said Catoctin Creek general manager and co-founder, Scott Harris. “The U.K. is one of the most important markets in Europe for American whiskey, and we are thrilled to be partnering with a distributor who specializes solely in American whiskey. That will give our brand the focused attention it deserves.”

Catoctin Creek will initially be available at Master of Malt, The Whisky Exchange, and other fine retailers throughout the United Kingdom. “I am delighted to welcome Catoctin Creek – ‘The Virginia Rye Whisky’ – to our portfolio of American Whiskies," said N10 Bourbons, Ltd. co-founder, Nathan Dawes. "Working with distillers such as Becky and Scott to bring to our market high quality products like Roundstone Rye, which is locally sourced, then mashed, fermented, distilled and aged completely in house at their Virginia distillery, is what we are in business for. I am confident that Catoctin Creek's range of 100% rye grain whiskies will prove to be massive hits with U.K. consumers.”

The arrangement between Catoctin Creek and N10 Bourbons is a new relationship for both companies. Barring any unforeseen problems with COVID-19, Harris hopes to make a trip to the U.K. in 2021, which will include visits to various retailers, bars and restaurants to introduce the brand to the market.

Harris adds, “Further, I would like to thank the work of the Virginia Department of Economic Development, who has tirelessly promoted Virginia spirits in the London market, and were instrumental in bringing us together with N10 Bourbons Ltd.”

The History of Catoctin Creek - Mash and Grain

Mash and Grain did a really lovely, comprehensive history of Catoctin Creek, dating back to before the distillery when Becky and Scott first met.  It covers the seeds of entrepreneurship that led to its ultimate establishment.  This is the most in-depth article written to date on our story, and contains intimate details on our thinking before the venture even formed:

Scott and Becky, circa 1991Distilleries require an incredible amount of upfront investment, so the loan certainly helped, but Scott and Becky were also pouring their entire life savings into this venture. In order to be licensed in Virginia, a distillery needed to have already purchased all of their equipment, set it up, and tested it to make sure it functioned properly. That meant securing a commercial location, signing a lease, thousands upon thousands of dollars in equipment, all before they could legally make a single drop. ... With all this money invested up front, they had sacrificed so much with no guarantee that the two of them had what it would take to make it work. ... [For] Scott it was more about faith. Faith in themselves.

He recounts a story from just after they were approved for their loan. Scott used a new social media platform, Twitter, to announce they had the financing to start their distillery. Shortly after, he received a call from Emily Maltby, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal who was doing a story on SBA loans, and wanted to feature them to lend a human element to the piece.

We got into the Wall Street Journal. We hadn’t even made anything. We felt like we were ordained by God to do this. We could do no wrong. Of course it will be good if we make it, because it has to be. Why would we do all this trouble otherwise? That’s kind of the complex you have when you’re an entrepreneur. You’re just gonna go full steam ahead, because of course it will be good.” - Scott Harris

Divine intervention or not, their strict process backgrounds proved to be a big asset.

Becky inspecting the Virginia rye grainAfter a few years have passed, fast forwarding to present time, they write a little about how we do grain selection to create a mash bill of 100% rye:

Scott and Becky are proud to say that their rye grain comes from local Virginia farms, but when they were first starting out it was very difficult to find farmers who would grow grain for them. For the first 6 or 7 years, they had to rely on commercial mills where they had no control over the varietals they would receive. Now they do have a handful of local farms they work with. Their mash bill is 100% rye, but not all one varietal. Their farmers need to find varietals that work well for their land and climates, so the combination has changed from time to time. Whenever a farmer brings a new varietal to Becky, she distills one batch with 100% of that specific grain so she can evaluate it’s profile from a sensory standpoint to get an idea of how it may fit into their products. Once she has a sense of it’s character she will slowly start to incorporate it into the mashbill in small quantities to maintain a consistent flavor profile. For a company that mostly deals in single barrel releases, they are basically doing the blending at the front end of production, with each varietal lending complexity and diversity of flavor from the very beginning.

It is a wonderful long-form biography.  I hope you'll enjoy it.

Stepping up to a legacy - American Whiskey magazine

Becky Harris of Catoctin Creek

Maggie Kimberl at American Whiskey recently wrote a fantastic story on the brief and recent history of the hand sanitizer chaos that emerged during the COVID-19 crisis.  Many, many distilleries across the country, both big and small, immediately stepped up and provided much needed sanitizing alcohol to their communities, most pivoting in a manner of days and weeks.  Becky Harris found herself suddenly in a leadership role in ACSA to help navigate this confusing time, and stepped up to help people save lives--literally save lives.  We are so proud of her.  Maggie writes:

“Both individually and within my distillery we were suddenly being approached by people asking if we had alcohol,” Harris recalls. “Bleach was gone, Purell was off the shelves, and we had a ton of people asking if we had any they could get hold of. It was obvious that people were really desperate. We were getting tons of calls.” Harris reports the industry went from ‘can this be done?’, to doing it in a matter of days. She was asked by the executive committee at the ACSA if she could take the lead on the matter and she did.

Cocktail ClassWe have only two classes remaining!  Join us for this really popular online cocktail party!

We are pleased to present, our SIXTH year of this six-part educational series on the art of the cocktail. This year, we have to adapt ourselves to the "new normal" of COVID, and thus, the classes will all be online via Zoom.  Each week, we will send out a shopping list of items for you to pick up, plus the course materials.  Then, every Friday night, get yourself comfortably placed behind your bar, with your computer on and ready to go, and we will enjoy the class interactively just as if we were together in person.

Scott will reprise his first year material with a class studying the chronology of the cocktail from the early 1800's through modern day.  Ingredients will be easy to obtain, and the lessons will be fun as ever.  This will be via Zoom, so I still expect lots of interaction and questions and good times.  It's a drinks class, after all!

As I mention in many of my classes, this class will be equal parts, cocktail how-to, history, and fun.

Cocktail of the Month – The Tanyard Cocktail

The Waterford Fair is a tradition in Loudoun County, Virginia, that goes back 75 years! Every year, local producers gather to sell their wares: quilts, leather goods, woolen goods, cheese, beer, wine, clothing... you get the idea. Thousands of customers descend upon the gentle rolling landscape of Waterford to browse the fair and kick off autumn. 2020 has been a tough year, and this year, the fair will do its first virtual event.

This cocktail was created by the Waterford Fair as their official cocktail, using both our apple brandy and some of Doug Fabbioli's hard apple cider. This little beverage is very delicious, and packs a punch!

The Fair runs Oct 2-4.  Get your tickets to the Waterford Fair - HERE:  waterfordfairva.org

One 1" piece of fresh ginger, peeled
1½ tsp simple syrup (or agave syrup)
1½ oz Catoctin Creek Apple Brandy
1½ oz Fabbioli Cellars Attitude Adjuster (hard apple cider)
1½ oz chilled ginger beer
1 lime wedge
1 apple slice

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the sliced ginger with the simple syrup. Add the brandy and ice. Shake well and strain into an ince-filled glass and top with equal parts ginger beer and hard cider. Garnish with the lime wedge and apple slice.

Roundstone Rye Family Tasting Notes by BourbonVeach

Michael Veach reviewed the three flagship spirits in our Roundstone Rye lineup:  the 80 proof, the 92 proof, and the cask proof.  Really good tasting notes from the reviews, and he even offers a cigar pairing.

About 7 or 8 years ago, I was a judge at the ADI conference at the Starlight Distillery in Indiana. That is where I met Scott Harris. He and his wife Becky founded the Catoctin Creek Distillery about that time and I had a chance to taste the new-make spirit for their rye. I liked it. It showed real promise. They had everything fundamentally correct and I enjoyed the flavors I tasted in the rye spirit. I have been looking forward to tasting their aged rye ever since that meeting.

A few weeks ago, they sent me three bottles of their rye at different proofs. I like them.

You can read the full reviews, here.

#InThisTogether Rye Whisky

The Whiskey Wash reviews #InThisTogether Rye Whisky!

We received a really wonderful review from Carin Moonin at The Whiskey Wash, regarding our #InThisTogether Rye Whisky that was done for charity.  We scored a very rare 5 out of 5 stars!  Yet, such a funny and insightful review. What's coolest is how much Carin seemed to enjoy the product:

Palate: Honey. Wonderful. Like how mead has always been described to me, versus how it actually tastes (i.e., mead is disgusting). But this is not. This is fantastic. It marries together all sorts of weird influences and makes it work, like a beautiful child from sexy parents. All the genetics of this whiskey are there and the outcome is marvelous. The mouthfeel is thinner than some but not at all tinny.

It is really delicious. I could drink this, neat, over and over again. It doesn’t need a damn thing. I want to try more of their whiskeys under better circumstances and it’s evident why they have received so many accolades. Well done.

Cocktail of the Month – Peach Berry Smash

Peach Berry Smash

This cocktail comes to us from Allison Barger Eddy, aka @tiptoeingthrujuleps on Instagram.  Allison writes:

For these hot summer days, I have fully embraced the pre-batched-mason-jar-cocktail trend. Just combine your cocktail ingredients in a mason jar and store it in the fridge until go time. Then add ice, shake it up, and enjoy! It doesn’t get much simpler than that!

Today’s #frontporchsipper took advantage of a strawberry-peach simple syrup I made last week and some of the fresh fruit that we can’t get enough of these days. The sweet, tart, fruity flavors at play here still allow the rye to shine... and what a good rye it is! (So good that I used my “backup” bottle for these photos rather than the almost-empty bottle that’s sitting on my bar shelf.)

2 oz Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye 92-proof Rye Whisky
½ oz Grand Marnier / Orange Liqueur
¾ oz Lemon Juice
½ oz Strawberry-peach simple syrup
Approx. 3 strawberries, hulled and halved
Approx. 4 slices of fresh peach
Mint sprig, for garnish

In a mason jar, combine all ingredients except garnish. Screw on the lid to the mason jar and store in fridge until ready to drink. When you’re ready to have your cocktail, add ice to the mason jar, screw on the lid, and shake everything together. Remove the lid, insert the mint sprig and a straw, and enjoy!
